This activity supports Lower Key Stage 2 Maths and PSHE objectives by helping children compare prices, calculate what they can afford, and decide which options offer the best value. It builds reasoning, budgeting, and problem-solving skills through real-world decision-making.
What you’ll need 🪙
-
Supermarket visit or online stores with clear prices.
-
Paper and pencil for working out totals.
-
A budget - for example, £10 to spend.
-
Optional: a calculator to check maths.
What to do 💡
-
Set the challenge. Tell your child they have £10 to spend on a fun activity - like buying snacks for a picnic, supplies for a craft afternoon, or items for a birthday bag. Their job is to find the best combination of items without going over budget.
-
Compare options. Together, look at different items and prices. Ask them:
-
Which one costs more?
-
Which one gives you more for your money?
-
Would you rather buy one big item or a few smaller ones?
-
Do the maths. Help them add up totals for different combinations and compare choices. For example:
-
Option A: 3 snacks at £2 each = £6
-
Option B: 2 snacks at £1.50 + drink at £2 = £5
-
Decide and explain. Once they’ve made their final decision, ask them to explain why they think it’s the best value.
Questions to ask your child 💬
-
“How do you know which choice is better value?”
-
“What could you do if you don’t have enough money for everything you want?”
-
“Would you rather have more items or better quality ones?”
-
“How can you make your money go further?”
What your child will learn 🎓
-
To add and compare prices using pounds and pence.
-
To plan within a set budget and make spending decisions.
-
To think critically about value, not just price.
-
To practise explaining reasoning using everyday maths.
