This activity supports Key Stage 1 Maths and PSHE objectives by helping children record amounts, practise simple addition, and reflect on how and why they spend money. It builds early budgeting and decision-making skills in a fun, everyday way.
What you’ll need 🪙
-
A notebook, piece of paper, or notes app on your phone.
-
A pencil or pen ✏️.
-
A few coins or pocket money your child has spent recently.
What to do 🧾
-
Start a simple diary. Explain that you’re going to keep track of everything they spend for a few days. This could include snacks, toys, or small treats. If they don’t usually spend money, you can imagine purchases together.
-
Write it down. Draw three quick columns:
What I bought
How much it cost
Need or want?
Apple
30p
Need 🍎
Sticker book
£1.50
Want 📘
-
Add it up. At the end of the week, help your child add up how much they spent altogether. Talk about where most of their money went.
-
Talk about choices. Ask which things they were happy to buy, and if there’s anything they might save for next time instead.
Questions to ask your child 💬
-
“What did you buy that made you happiest?”
-
“Was that something you needed or just wanted?”
-
“If you saved that £1 instead, what could you buy next week?”
-
“Did you get good value for your money?”
What your child will learn 🎓

To record and add up small amounts of money.
-
To think about choices and understand that money can run out.
