Year 1 Activity

Coin Match Game

This activity supports Key Stage 1 Maths objectives by helping children recognise and name coins, match them to their values, and begin to understand that different coins represent different amounts. It also supports PSHE goals by encouraging confidence and independence when handling money.

What you’ll need 🪙

  • A small selection of real coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2).

  • Scrap paper or sticky notes to write values on (no printing needed).

  • A flat surface like a table or floor space to play.

What to do 🏠

  • Lay out the coins. Spread the real coins out in front of your child so they can see all the shapes, sizes, and colours.

  • Write the values. On small bits of paper, write the values (1p, 2p, 5p, etc.) and mix them up.

  • Start matching! Ask your child to match each coin to the correct number. Encourage them to look closely - what’s written on the coin? What size / colour is it?

  • Add a challenge. Once they’ve matched them all, try mixing them up again and timing how fast they can do it. Older or more confident children can also order the coins from the smallest to the largest value.

Questions to ask your child 💬

  • “How can you tell which coin is worth the most?”

  • “Which two coins look the most different?”

  • “Can you find two coins that make 10p altogether?”

  • “Why do you think the coins are different shapes and sizes?”

What your child will learn 🎓

  • To recognise coins by appearance, colour, and value.

  • To connect written numbers (1p, 2p, 5p…) to real coins.

  • To compare values and begin ordering amounts of money.

  • To develop fine motor skills through handling small objects.
